Understanding Acupuncture for Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is one of the most common health complaints worldwide. It can range from a dull ache to sharp, radiating pain that limits daily activities. While Western medicine often turns to injections, medications, or even surgery, acupuncture offers another path—one recognized by systems like Medicare and the VA for its effectiveness.

A Chinese Medicine Perspective

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), pain often arises from stagnation—when qi (vital energy) and blood stop flowing smoothly. This stagnation can be triggered by injury, poor posture, overuse, or even emotional stress. The result is pain, tension, and restricted movement.

There are two main types:

  • Qi stagnation: Dull, achy pain, often eased with movement or warmth.

  • Blood stasis: More severe, stabbing pain, made worse by heat or pressure.

Lower back pain can also signal a Kidney imbalance in TCM, especially if accompanied by fatigue, knee pain, or reproductive issues.

How Acupuncture Helps

Acupuncture uses fine needles at specific points to restore circulation and balance. By “completing the circuit” of disrupted energy pathways, it helps relieve pain and improve mobility. Treatments may also focus on strengthening Kidney energy, sometimes supported with herbal medicine or lifestyle changes.

From a biomedical standpoint, acupuncture relaxes tight muscles, improves local blood flow, and triggers the release of endorphins—your body’s natural painkillers. The combination helps reduce discomfort while encouraging healing.
